Hello! I'm Deepdarkwaters on Ao3 as well.

This is going to get a bit tl;dr so I'll do the short version first: I'm easy to please and happy to be completely surprised, as long as you don't include any of the few DNWs mentioned below. If you've got a story or art in mind then do it your way! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

(I've never requested art before and not really sure how to, so this is my standard fic exchange letter - I promise that DOES NOT mean I won't be as happy with art as with fic! Go with your inspiration, you know what you're doing more than I do. I love all styles of art. Forever fascinated by the different ways people interpret an idea visually.)

General loves: (probably not applicable to every song requested, but just so you've got an overview of some of the things I enjoy in whatever combination) worldbuilding/exploration of the canon world; dialogue; description; competence (someone utterly absorbed in a job or a craft and doing it really well - swoon); petty arguments; a sense of wonder; smart girls and women; unreliable narrators; found families; really old comfy friendships; really old comfy friendships that accidentally/unexpectedly become more; clumsy inappropriate humour; backstories; melancholy; loonngg dragged out UST that feels like it'll never end and then ENDS GLORIOUSLY; any gender pairing if you go romantic. I have no expectations or demands with regards to romance vs. gen - please create whatever makes you happiest or makes the most sense for you, because I'll honestly be equally as happy with either.

Please don't gift me: sex that's not unambiguously consensual and between people aged 16 or over; kink (not because I don't EVER like it, just because I'm not feeling it for these songs); anything to do with execution, especially hanging. Please avoid!

Also I realise this makes me weird, but: I have this absurd phobia about Big Things. I know it's sort of nuts. It's so difficult to explain exactly what's going to set me off feeling all sweaty and sick because often I don't even know myself until it's happening, so just wanted to mention it - please avoid including anything like oversized statues or super high bridges just in case. It's so ridiculous and I'm sure it'd never come up anyway, but I feel stupidly paranoid that the one time I don't mention it will be the time I get 1000 words of someone marvelling at the size of Christ the Redeemer. SHUDDER.

Rating: I'm happy with anything from G to NC-17, whatever works best for you.

Gender/pairings: In my prompts below I'm using whatever pronouns were used in the songs, but feel free to switch that around if you prefer something else.

SONGS (alphabetically, not order of preference):

Autumn's Here - Hawksley Workman (song) | YouTube (live acoustic) | YouTube (recording) | Lyrics

I think that ghosts like the cooler weather
When leaves turn colour they get together
And walk along these old back roads
Where no one lives and no one goes
With all their hopes set on the railway
That never came and then no one stayed
I guess that autumn gets you remembering
And the smallest things just make you cry

I love the sort of cathartic melancholy feeling in this song. The verse about the ghosts particularly sticks out for me, but the whole song is full of history and backstory and such a sense of place. I didn't really have anything solid in mind when I nominated this song, so please run with whatever line or theme or imagery captures you. It's so evocative, and he's always so good at getting this perfect balance between sad and uplifting. That mood always really works for me.

(I've linked both a live version and the recording above because there's a really interesting difference in mood between the two. The live one is more fragile and pensive, and the recording builds up in layers and layers of sound until it soars. I don't know how much that'll affect your take on the song, but thought I'd include it in case it sparks something off.)

Circus - Tom Waits (song) | YouTube | Lyrics

and then there was Yodelling Elaine, the queen of the air, who wore a dollar sign medallion
and she had a tiny bubble of spittle around her nostril and a little rusty tear
for she had lassoed and lost another tipsy sailor
and over in the burnt yellow tent by the frozen tractor, the music was like electric sugar
and Zuzu Bolin played Stavin' Chain and Mighty Tiny on the saw
and he threw his head back with a mouth full of gold teeth
and they played Lopsided Heart and Moon Over Dog Street
and by the time they finished Moanin Low I was soaking wet and wild eyed

I'm such a massive fan of Waits' singing (I know it's not for everyone) but his spoken word stuff is another beast completely. Could listen to his speaking voice all day. I love the rambling stream of consciousness feel to this one, I love how vivid all the characters are in only a few words, I love this sense of weary realism he always brings. Would love fic or art about any of these characters - backstories, futures, romance, murder, anything. Does Elaine ever keep a sailor? Does Poodle ever get her whiskey and gun? Who is the narrator and what's his part in the circus?

Memory of a Free Festival - David Bowie (song) | YouTube | Lyrics

the children of the summer's end gathered in the dampened grass
we played our songs and felt the London sky resting on our hands
it was God's land, it was ragged and naive, it was heaven

THIS SONG. There are two things I was thinking of when I nominated this: 1) It's such a vivid picture of a '60s music festival and the epic power music has to move people, so anything that captures that sort of love, passion, inspiration, happiness, friendship, whatever would be amazing. Or 2) take the lines about "we scanned the skies with rainbow eyes and saw machines of every shape and size / we talked with tall Venusians passing though" literally - an alien invasion during a music festival? War of the Worlds meets Woodstock, but with love instead of devastation. This song is mega special to me so I'm going to love anything at all to do with it. Run wild!

There's a cover by Tom Harries and Aneurin Barnard from the soundtrack of the film Hunky Dory which I reeaally love as well. Just in case you want to hear it as a duet and do something with that instead: http://youtu.be/SDtj9PS0wT0

Ophelia - Natalie Merchant (song) | YouTube | Lyrics

Ophelia was a tempest, cyclone, a goddamn hurricane
your common sense, your best defence lay wasted and in vain
for Ophelia'd know your every woe and every pain you'd ever had
she'd sympathise and dry your eyes and help you to forget

I'd love to know about any of these Ophelias, separately or together. Do any of them know each other? Reincarnation? Obviously the name Ophelia has massive connotations because of Hamlet - happy for that to be explored or totally ignored, whatever you like, but I'd prefer it not to be solely about suicide if possible. It's such a powerful song, I mean in the way it delivers its message but also that it's literally about powerful women and the different ways they have of affecting the world, so any exploration of that would be amazing.

The Day Before You Came - ABBA (song) | YouTube | Lyrics

must have opened my front door at eight o'clock or so
and stopped along the way to buy some Chinese food to go
I'm sure I had my dinner watching something on TV
there's not I think a single episode of Dallas that I didn't see
I must have gone to bed around a quarter after ten
I need a lot of sleep, and so I like to be in bed by then
I must have read a while, the latest one by Marilyn French or something in that style
it's funny, but I had no sense of living without aim the day before you came

This song is so sad! (But a total masterpiece, it's brilliant.) I really want a fix-it fic. Who is she talking to? What happens the next day? Someone turning up and making her feel less trapped and lonely would be wonderful (I sort of want that to be a friend, not a perfect Hollywood whirlwind romance?), but I also thought this could be a perfect starting point for some kind of epic fantasy adventure. Spaceships? Zombies? Time travel? Whatever you can think of that's the total opposite of being stuck in a lonely rut of work and takeaway.

The Traitor - Martha Wainwright (song) | YouTube | Lyrics

the judges said "you missed it by a fraction
rise up and brace your troops for the attack"
the dreamers ride against the men of action
see the men of action falling back

but I lingered on her thigh a fatal moment
I kissed her lips as though I thirsted still
my falsity had stung me like a hornet
the poison sank and it paralysed my will

I could not move to warn all the younger soldiers
that they had been deserted from above
so on the battlefields from here to Barcelona
I'm listed with the enemies of love

I think this might be the only Leonard Cohen cover I like better than his. *_* I'm not sure exactly how to make a request for fic about this song, I can't really pinpoint anything specific I want to read. It's more about the mood of it, melancholy and regret and resignation. I love all the battle/judging/traitor metaphors for love gone wrong, and I feel like this could work really well as historical and/or war fic if that's what you're into. Any gender pairing is fine - bonus points for f/f though, because although it's Cohen's song I can't help thinking of this version even when I hear others.
